Specialised Skin Cancer Care

At SkinSpots, we offer a comprehensive range of surgical and non surgical  procedures to address various skin concerns, particularly focusing on the detection and treatment of skin cancers. Our services include:

Skin excision

A skin biopsy involves removing a small sample of skin tissue for laboratory analysis. This procedure is essential for accurately diagnosing skin conditions, including cancers, and determining the most effective treatment plan. In some cases , excision of the full lesion , rather than a small portion, might be indicated.  Complex areas that require reconstructive surgeries  with skin grafts or flaps  such as in face can be performed by some of our skilled doctors. The goal is always complete clearance of the skin cancer as well as optimal cosmetic outcome.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a medical treatment that uses extreme cold (-196°C), typically in the form of liquid nitrogen, to freeze and destroy abnormal or damaged tissue. It is commonly used to treat various skin lesions, including pre-cancerous and benign growths. During cryotherapy, liquid nitrogen is applied directly to the skin using a spray or a cotton-tipped applicator. The freezing process causes cellular damage, disrupting the structure of the targeted tissue. Over the following days, the treated area may blister, scab, or peel, allowing new, healthy tissue to form. When used on appropriate lesions and applied correctly, cryotherapy can result in successful treatment

Curettage

Curettage is a medical procedure commonly used in skin cancer  to remove abnormal or cancerous skin tissue. It involves scraping away the lesion with a specialized surgical tool called a curette. This technique is often paired with electrodesiccation (the application of heat or electric current to destroy residual cancer cells and control bleeding. Only specific lesions are amenable for this type of treatment.

Topical treatments

For certain superficial skin cancers, your doctor may prescribe creams or gels that are applied directly to the affected area. These treatments work by stimulating the body’s immune response to target and destroy cancerous cells. This approach can be particularly beneficial for certain types of skin cancer without the need for a surgical excision.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Photodynamic therapy uses a photosensitising agent applied to the skin, which is then activated by a specific wavelength of light. This activation destroys cancerous and pre-cancerous cells while sparing healthy tissue. PDT is suitable for treating superficial basal cell carcinomas and actinic keratoses, offering the advantage of minimal scarring.

Radiotherapy

In cases where surgery is not feasible or practical, radiotherapy may be an alternative option to explore. This treatment uses targeted radiation to destroy cancer cells. If this is a possibility , then you will be offered a referral to a specialist radiation oncologist for further consultation and advice

We recommend having a professional skin check every 12 months. Additionally, as advised by Cancer Council Australia, adults should self-check their skin and moles every three months. Regular self-examinations help you become familiar with your skin, making it easier to notice any changes.

When performing a self-examination, remember the SCAN method:  (developed by skin cancer college Australasia  https://www.scanyourskin.org/)

  • Sore : A spot which is sore (scaly, itchy, bleeding, tender) and doesn’t heal within 6 weeks.
  • Changing: Changing in size, shape, colour or texture.
  • Abnormal:Looks different, feels different, or stands out when compared to your other spots and moles.
  • New: Has appeared on your skin recently. Any new moles or spots should be checked, especially if you are over 40

Additionally, consider the ABCDEs of melanoma:

  • Asymmetry: One half doesn’t match the other.
  • Border: Edges are irregular or blurred.
  • Colour: Varies throughout the spot.
  • Diameter: Larger than 6mm.
  • Evolving: Changes over time.

If you notice any of these signs, schedule a professional skin check promptly with our team.

Yes, a family history of skin cancer (melanoma)  can increase your risk. Both genetic factors and shared lifestyle habits play a role. If skin cancer runs in your family, we recommend more frequent self-checks and regular professional examinations.

Yes, skin cancer can affect individuals of all skin tones. While people with darker skin have more melanin, which offers some protection against UV radiation, they are not immune to skin cancer. Regular skin checks are important for everyone, regardless of skin colour.

Yes, individuals with fair skin, especially those with freckles and red hair, have a higher risk of developing skin cancer. This is due to lower levels of melanin, which provides less natural protection against UV radiation.

Early detection of skin cancer significantly increases the chances of successful treatment. Identifying and addressing skin cancer in its initial stages can prevent it from becoming more serious. Regular skin checks are a proactive way to maintain your health.
