Why Choose SkinSpots?

At SkinSpots, we do things differently:

The Importance of Regular Skin Checks

Regular skin checks are crucial in Australia due to the high prevalence of skin cancer caused by intense UV exposure. Early detection through routine screenings significantly improves treatment outcomes and can be life-saving. With melanoma being one of the most common cancers, regular monitoring helps identify changes early before they become dangerous

Finding a trusted skin cancer clinic nearby is the first step in protecting your skin. At SkinSpots, we make it easy to book a comprehensive full-body skin check, a proactive measure to detect and address skin cancer in its earliest stages.  We recommend a skin check at least once every 12 months or sooner if you notice any unusual spots or have a higher risk of skin cancer.

What is the difference between a spot , a lesion, and a mole ?

These terms are interchangeable and basically are referring to the exact same thing.

How to Detect Skin Cancer : What to Watch For

Skin cancer can develop in areas exposed to the sun as well as those that are not. To catch potential issues early, it’s essential to monitor your skin regularly. A good starting point is the ABCDEs or SCAN self assessment  simple guideline to help you identify warning signs. However, while at-home checks are important, they are not a substitute for professional assessments by a qualified doctor.

The ABCDEs of Skin Cancer

Asymmetry:

Skin cancers are often asymmetrical. If you draw a line through the centre of the mole or lesion, the two halves may not match.

Border:

Skin cancers typically have irregular or uneven borders, with scalloped or notched edges, unlike the smooth edges of common moles.

Colour:

Look out for moles with multiple colours or uneven pigmentation. Normal moles are usually a uniform shade of brown, but skin cancers may have various shades of brown, black, tan, or even white, red, or blue.

Diameter or Darkness:

Be cautious of moles larger than 6 mm (the size of a pencil eraser) or those significantly darker than others. In some cases, melanomas can be pink in colour  and not necessarily brown/black.

Evolving:

Any change in a mole’s size, shape, colour, elevation, or symptoms like bleeding, itching, or crusting should be assessed by a doctor immediately.

Sore

A spot which is sore (scaly, itchy, bleeding, tender) and doesn’t heal within 6 weeks.

Changing

Changing in size, shape, colour or texture.

Abnormal

Looks different, feels different, or stands out when compared to your other spots and moles.

New

Has appeared on your skin recently. Any new moles or spots should be checked, especially if you are over 40

Types of Skin Cancer

Understanding the Types of Skin Cancer

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)

The most common form of skin cancer, BCC, is typically slow-growing and less aggressive. It often appears on sun-exposed areas such as the head, neck, and upper body. Signs include:

A lump or dry, scaly patch

Colours ranging from red, pale, to pearly white

A sore that doesn’t heal or repeatedly ulcerates

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC

SCC is less common when compared to BCC. SCC is a dangerous skin cancer and can spread if left untreated especially in the head and neck areas. It often develops on areas exposed to the sun and grows over several months. However, sometimes it can develop over a matter of a few weeks. Warning signs include:

Thickened, red, scaly patches

Lesions that crust, bleed, or ulcerate

Pain

Melanoma

Melanoma is one of the most serious types of skin cancer, with unpredictable growth patterns. Early melanomas may grow slowly, but more aggressive forms can develop rapidly within weeks. Melanoma can spread to other parts of the body, becoming life-threatening. In Australia, approximately 16,800 people are expected to be diagnosed with melanoma this year, and every six hours, one Australian dies from melanoma

Melanoma can develop from existing dark spots and may have multiple color variations, including brown, blue, grey, or pink. It can appear flat or raised. Use the ABCDE or SCAN self-assessment methods, or book a consultation with Skinspots for a professional skin cancer evaluation
